At least 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime

A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. In excess of 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials said.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "shocked" by the security action, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the city's international airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

Local authorities confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Locals have compared the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Criminal Expansion

The Red Command group has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the operation, together with numerous weapons.

The joint operation by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
