Big 12 Conference Commissioner Labels Notre Dame Comments After CFP Omission as ‘Completely Out of Bounds’

During a notable rebuke, Big 12 Conference commissioner asserted that Notre Dame's AD, Pete Bevacqua, was “completely out of bounds” for public comments about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Controversy

The Fighting Irish has a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a full member in all other sports. Bevacqua has argued that the ACC actively damaged Notre Dame’s bid to enter the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to campaigning for the selection of the University of Miami.

“The ACC does wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we provide substantial football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would go out of your way to try to hurt us in this process,” the athletic director stated.

Miami ultimately received the CFP berth over Notre Dame, largely due to securing the direct matchup between the two programs. Bevacqua also claimed that the ACC engaged in a coordinated social media effort over multiple weeks demonstrating its preference for Miami.

A Strong Response

Later on Tuesday, the Big 12 commissioner spoke about the comments at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“In my view his conduct has been unacceptable,” the commissioner said. “He is completely out of bounds in his approach and if he was in the same room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

The criticism is especially striking given Bevacqua’s unique standing. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the concerns of independent Notre Dame.

Past Support and Future Rumors

Yormark further pointed out the support the ACC offered Notre Dame in the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, providing the Irish a complete conference schedule and a berth in its championship game.

“It has been egregious,” Yormark reiterated. “It’s been unacceptable attacking Jim Phillips, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”

Speculation had circulated about Notre Dame possibly leaving the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. However, the commissioner's public reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a partnership unlikely in the immediate future.

Notre Dame, who reached the CFP final last season, have announced they plan to decline a postseason invitation after missing out this season.
